So I had a go in BERU operating the ZF1A station remote.
At around 4pm Friday got things up using Remoterig and then slowly adding more of the features that the ZF1A regulars have implemented including livestreaming cameras and Anydesk access to antenna switches, rotators and BigAmp control heads.
At around 4pm Saturday, seemingly as sure as clockwork, my ISP kicked everything off my router, in particular the Remoterig box – in the heat of the contest – requiring a re-boot, re-introducing all wires slowly, and losing 5 minutes. G3TBK lost his 15m ZF mult because of this.
Do we have any networking grown-ups who know why this would have occurred? I get lots of kick-offs but this was really seemed like an in-your-face ‘You’ve been doing something we don’t really like for 24 hours, get off!’ kind of effect.
Its Virgin Media’s full-on broadband and TV plus Formula-1 wallet-damage package, so I’m none too impressed. Not that there’s anyone to complain to that doesn’t require two hours in a queue, of course.

I have a similar reset issue here but at the remote site 4G end. On the plus side at least you are recognising the issue as a network ‘feature’ which I expect is related to you being on a residential package rather than a business one. It may be related to DHCP leases. It might be worthwhile checking after the reset to see if your public is address has changed. It might be some other network timer on a firewall or other device in the ISP’s infrastructure. Either way unlikely you’ll get them to change it, I would expect you’ll struggle to get any sense from their support desk on what is likely to be a niche fault. No harm in trying but don’t hold out.

ISP’s don’t like customers that act like an ISP on their network. This is a conventional network limitation imposed by any ISP. RR performs as an ISP ‘server’.
One work around is to set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN is required to use RR, without upsetting your ISP. However, a VPN has complex implications and will do more damage to that wallet.
An alternative solution is to use VNC. I use the VNC ‘Enterprise’ product for remote control of my station. VNC won’t hurt your wallet. I can generate CW without RR.
Thanks for all your contributions, over many years, to make BERU a great experience for all. Obviously this year was not your best experience.
Next year will be much better. The sunspots are on the up.
