Rule Change Proposals RSGB HFCC White Paper 2015
Precis for Commonwealth Contest entrants
This document outlines suggestions and proposals for rule changes for both HF and VHF contests in 2016. Comments on these items are invited. Please send your comments to committee@rsgbcc.org no later than 7th August 2015. All comments will be reviewed by the RSGB Contest Committee (CC) during August and September and revised rules for all RSGB contests will be published as soon as possible after the review. All rule changes will take effect on 1st January 2016.
2.10. Commonwealth Contest – Change the format so that the World can work the Commonwealth.
6.8. BERU – To assist identifying QRP stations, remove the requirement to put QRP in the Cabrillo header and add a requirement to enter the power output used when submitting the log.
6.9. BERU – In the rules, change all references to BERU to Commonwealth Contest and suggest entrants call CQ CC not CQ BERU.

The qrp/power rule change makes some sense if you will be grading stations on a curve? Otherwise qrp as defined by several qrp clubs is 5W CW, 10W SSB. It is an honour thing anyway but it is a tad obvious when you hear a ‘qrp’ or an M3/M6 station louder right after another 400W station from the same DXCC with only a simple antenna apparently.
As for the CQ rule change…
I thought the idea behind the contest name abbreviation was to make sure the name BERU or British Empire Radio Union carried on? Yes understood the contest name changed years ago.
Not sure CQ CC rather than CQ BERU will make non BERU countries notice or listen if you are in a wanted DXCC though I think for some the brain cuts off after hearing CQ most time anyway …. I think it is a REALLY bad idea. You know many travel specially just to activate some countries for others. That the call is CQ BERU means ops KNOW on air (and those monitoring the cluster!) what the station is all about. I think changing to CC will confuse many.
Please if this is the request for a station to be able to increase a qso rate as it is marginally quicker to send -.-. -.-. and not -… . .-…- and hope stations did not mishear (qsb does odd things) and thought cqcq was sent instead! then may I suggest they go operate in CQWW etc. Is anyone in BERU ever THAT busy?
I am a bit concerned by the comment “Commonwealth Contest – Change the format so that the World can work the Commonwealth”…. so non BERU country entrants can take part?…don’t see that rule change but very bad idea…. the fact that the contest IS limited to commonwealth countries only gives many ops in UK the opportunity to work other commonwealth countries. I think all “travellers” to less active DXCC have been on the receiving end of terrible behaviour from non commonwealth country ops during the contest IF they give in and respond to just one calling station. Then they can almost never work another commonwealth station again. Please do not open the contest.
If there are going to be odd rule suggestions to make it not really about the original BERU any more or to bring the contest up to date then how about add an SSB section and/or a sub 20 wpm CW section 🙂

I dont support BERU vs the world or ‘CQ CC’.the great thing about BERU is the little stations getting a chance to work commonwealth dx without the east EU pilups!!
